Jetstar Asia Aids China Earthquake Survivors

Jetstar Asia has embarked on a donation drive on selected flights to provide aid to survivors of the horrific earthquake that rocked Sichuan province in China on 12 May 2008. Jetstar Asia is also the first and only airline in Singapore to organise an in-flight donation drive for the earthquake survivors.

From 26 May 2008, Jetstar Asia has begun collecting monetary donations on behalf of the Singapore Red Cross. All monies collected will be channelled to the Red Cross Society of China through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and used for relief efforts.

Jetstar Asia CEO MS Chong Phit Lian said, “My colleagues and I are saddened and shocked by the calamity that has struck millions of people in Sichuan, China. Although Jetstar Asia does not operate flights to China at the moment, our hearts are with the survivors and we are doing our best to help them with this donation drive. So far, we are getting good response to the donation drive on our flights.”

Added Ms Chong, "Although our contribution is small in comparison to the massive aid needed to help the survivors who may have lost their families and homes, we believe every effort can make a difference."

Jetstar Asia Reports Profit Ahead of Schedule

Jetstar Asia, which just turned three on 13 December 2007, has turned profitable ahead of schedule. The company, which includes its sister airline Valuair, has seen a 20% increase in revenue, a 4% rise in passenger load factor to more than 75% and about 20% jump in passenger carriage for the year ended 31 March 2008.

Attributing its achievement to prudent cost and resource management, as well as healthy passenger revenue and load factors in the face of rising fuel costs, Jetstar Asia’s Chief Executive Officer Ms Chong Phit Lian says, "With these measures, we have streamlined our operations, optimised the use of our resources and increased our loads and ticket sales." The airline sells 70 per cent of its tickets via its website at www.jetstar.com with the rest through travel agents and call centres.

While fuel accounts for 40% of the group's expenses in the year just ended, Jetstar Asia is confident that it is on the path to sustainable growth. Says Ms Chong, "Our focus will continue to be on increasing utilisation, growing revenue and broadening the earnings base."

Jetstar Asia flew its inaugural flight to Hong Kong on 13 December 2004 and acquired Valuair on 22 July 2005. Both carriers now operate a total of seven aircrafts and 126 weekly flights to 14 Asian destinations in 9 countries, including the recently added Kuala Lumpur, Macau and Medan. It has also added a fourth daily Valuair service to Jakarta and is allowing passengers on all Jakarta flights to change their flight departure timing with a nominal fee.

Ms Chong who took the helm at Jetstar Asia two years ago says, "When I joined the group in March 2006, I forecast that we would turn in a profit in three years. But we have achieved profitability ahead of schedule in just two years. This is a testament to the team we have at Jetstar Asia and the fact that the market is more aware of and receptive to our product."

Besides free online seat selection, comfortable leather seats and a generous 20-kg luggage allowance, Jetstar Asia and Valuair operate from Changi Airport Terminal One, offering passengers more value and comfort.

Jetstar Asia is a proud recipient of various industry awards, including the prestigious Skytrax Airline of the Year Award for Best Low-cost Airline in both the Asia and South-east Asia categories in 2006 and World's Best Low-Cost Airlines in 2007.
